Topics/Learning Objectives

TAP’s workshops include anti-bullying techniques to help students deal with difficult situations with or without a disability. Other disability specific topics are epilepsy, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy and other medical conditions.

New this year, 2017,  we have launched a program about autism spectrum disorder.

Our goal for each workshop is to educate, build awareness and acceptance, and to create kinder, more inclusive school communities. Topics presented with the Ontario curriculum, character development traits and reinforce inquiry based learning.

Anti-Bullying Workshop Learning Objectives
1) Bullying is when someone is not being treated properly
2) Bullying can come in the form of physical or emotional actions
3) People might bully because they feel scared, unhappy, jealous, excluded or unsure of themselves
4) A bully is not always a bully
5) It is important to stand up for yourself and others if you are being bullied

The Sleepover (Grades 1-3) & King of the Castle (Grades 4-6)
Epilepsy & Seizure First Aid Workshop Learning Objectives
1) Epilepsy is a common brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. It is a medical condition.
2) A person who lives with epilepsy wears a medic alert bracelet
3) Seizures are something that happens to a person with epilepsy. It is a brief disruption in normal brain activity that interferes with brain function.
4) A person with epilepsy can do anything that they want to do
5) Steps for seizure first aid are: stay calm, move sharp objects out of the way, make sure they are on their side, put something soft under their head, do not put anything in their mouth, get an adult to help out, call 911 if the seizure lasts for more than 5 minutes.

Cerebral Palsy Workshop Learning Objectives

1) Cerebral Palsy is a condition that affects the brain.
2) A person with cerebral palsy who uses a wheelchair, braces or crutches is able to anything they would like to do, they just do it in a different way
3) A person with cerebral palsy wants to be treated just like everyone else, with respect
4) Cerebral Palsy affects everyone differently
5) A person with cerebral palsy can play basketball and other sports & if they work hard can get good grades, just like everyone else

Spina Bifida Workshop Learning Objectives

1) Spina Bifida is a condition that affects the spinal cord.
2) A person with spina bifida wants to have a friend and be included just like everyone else
3) Spina Bifida affects everyone differently
4) Your brain & spinal cord control all the movements in your body
5) A person with spina bifida can audition for a musical or a play and can downhill ski, just like everyone else

Hydrocephalus Workshop
 Learning Objectives
1) Hydrocephalus is a condition that affects your brain. Hydro means water and cephalus refers to your brain.
2) A person with hydrocephalus has difficulties doing things , just like everyone else.
3) Hydrocephalus affects everyone differently.
4) A person with hydrocephalus may have to be away from school due to needing surgery. They will need a shunt (tube) that helps to drain extra liquid away from the brain.
5) A person with hydrocephalus can run and play and do well at school, just like everyone else.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Workshop Learning Objectives
1) A person with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has a brain that works differently from others.
2) Autism Spectrum Disorder is a condition that affects everyone differently, it is not contagious.
3) Sometimes a person with ASD is sensitive to loud noises and may need to use headphones or go to a quiet place to calm down.
4) A person with ASD might avoid making eye contact, they aren’t being rude, they sometimes find it difficult to make and maintain eye contact.
5) When we take time to understand people with ASD  we are better able to be their friends and learn to accept differences.

To reinforce the material taught in each program, there are relevant activity sheets for the students. The teachers can use the information and activities to continue the discussion after our TAP workshop has ended.
